We’re loving…espadrilles

Forget blister-inducing sandals or thongs –

espadrilles are where it’s at this summer.

The Barb wedge espadrille, $298 at Midas, David Jones and Melbourne Central.

There’s so many reasons why we love summer – it’s the feeling of diving beneath a cool wave when the sun becomes almost unbearably warm, it’s emergency trips to Gelato Messina, cocktails at sunset and flowing day dresses. But there’s one area that becomes somewhat more complicated during warmer months and that’s casual footwear. Of course there’s no shortage of cool new sandal styles but making it through a long day of Christmas shopping while wearing your chic laser-cut or brand new strappy sandals can be nothing short of toe-slicing torture. And then there are rubber thongs. Ideal for the beach; notably less ideal for anything more sophisticated.

Hello, espadrilles. Originating from Spain this style of shoe is traditionally made from jute rope or braided hemp with a linen upper. Because the sole is natural it easily molds to the shape of the foot, making the shoe incredibly comfortable and easy to wear.

While the style has a long history – there’s a pair in the Archaeological Museum of Granada dating back almost 4000 years – the shoe has been consistently reinvented to reflect contemporary trends. So pick up a pair and give your feet a treat.
